Waxy Maize vs Maltodextrin vs Dextrose (and Cyclic Dextrin)

How waxy maize stacks up against maltodextrin, dextrose, cyclic dextrin and modified starches — speed, stomach comfort, cost and best use.

Updated November 3, 2026

Every carb powder ends up as glucose in your blood. What changes is how fast it gets there, how it feels in your stomach, and what it costs. Here's how waxy maize compares with the other common sports carbs.

The comparison table

CarbWhat it isBlood sugar riseBest useWatch out for
DextrosePure glucoseFastestRapid refuel between sessionsVery sweet; sugar spike
MaltodextrinShort glucose chains from starchFastSports drinks, fast recoveryCan upset some stomachs in strong mixes
Waxy maizeNative starch, ~90–99% amylopectinSlower, flatterPre-workout energy, bulking, shake add-inNot a fast carb, despite the marketing
Cyclic dextrin (HBCD)Enzyme-treated waxy maize amylopectinModerate and steadyDrinking during long trainingCosts much more per gram
Modified starch (e.g. UCAN)Heat-moisture treated waxy maizeSlowestBefore long endurance sessionsStomach upset in some athletes when used mid-exercise

Waxy maize vs maltodextrin

This is the matchup most people ask about. In a human study comparing 50 g of waxy maize with a maltodextrin-sucrose drink, waxy maize produced lower blood glucose and insulin responses, especially in the first hour. So:

Maltodextrin is usually cheaper. Waxy maize tends to taste blander and less sweet.

Waxy maize vs dextrose

Dextrose is glucose itself, so it needs no digestion and enters the blood the fastest. Over a full 12 hours, though, a classic cyclist study found glycogen recovery was similar after amylopectin-rich starch and glucose. If your next workout is tomorrow, either works. If it's in three hours, dextrose wins.

Waxy maize vs cyclic dextrin

Highly branched cyclic dextrin (sold as Cluster Dextrin) is made from the same waxy maize amylopectin, but an enzyme reshapes it into a ring-like, highly branched molecule. It has very low osmolality, which is what waxy maize was always claimed to have. It's the better choice to sip during long sessions. It's also several times more expensive.

Waxy maize vs modified starch

Hydrothermally modified waxy maize (UCAN SuperStarch) is the native starch treated with heat and moisture so it digests even more slowly. Studies show it raises fat burning and keeps blood sugar flat, but it hasn't clearly improved performance compared with standard sports drinks, and one study reported more stomach distress when it was used during exercise. It's best taken 30–60 minutes before long, steady sessions.
